From knowledge to action: Information for conservation in Tambopata
From knowledge to action: Information for conservation in Tambopata
Our Objective
This project facilitates decision-making for nature conservation and human well-being in the Amazon by generating georeferenced data on agroforestry systems, conservation-based tourism, and value chains of non-timber products such as the Amazon nut (Brazil nut). It also includes reporting on the socioeconomic and political history of Madre de Dios and a detailed analysis of our interventions in the region.

Summary
The current development model in the province of Tambopata often prioritizes the unsustainable extraction of natural resources over nature conservation and community well-being.
To counter this, the Wyss Academy for Nature seeks to generate georeferenced data on sustainable activities such as agroforestry systems, conservation-based tourism, and the value chains of non-timber products like the Amazon nuts (Brazil nuts). This data is made available to relevant stakeholders through the Wyss Academy Geoportal (a georeferenced data platform). Additionally, the project team, together with a key stakeholder, is developing reports on the socioeconomic and political history of Madre de Dios, as well as on the relational values and ecosystem services of its transforming landscapes. Furthermore, the team is conducting a critical review of the Wyss Academy’s own interventions in the region to draw lessons for future action.
By using targeted engagement strategies, the Wyss Academy for Nature ensures that this information reaches relevant stakeholders, enabling more strategic and knowledge-based decision-making. In doing so, it helps bridge the gap between research and practice and strengthens collaboration among key actors at both local and national levels.
