Symposium
Symposium
Our Objective
On August 24, 2022, we came together—both in person and online—for the inaugural Wyss Academy Symposium. Held at the Kursaal Conference Center in Bern, Switzerland, the event offered an opportunity to explore holistic pathways toward systemic transformation in the fields of climate, biodiversity, and land use, and to connect with like-minded experts from around the world.

Summary
Organized in conjunction with the 2022 Spirit of Bern event, which took place the day before under the motto How to Save the Planet, the Symposium featured a virtual keynote address by Al Gore, who also answered questions from presenters. Other speakers included prominent voices such as Sonia Seneviratne, Maja Göpel, and Thomas Vellacott.
The day was structured in two parts, each with a distinct format. Three parallel working sessions took place during the morning, followed by a visioning challenge, an Ideathon in the afternoon. Participants were invited to join both sessions, either virtually or physically.
The Parallel Working Sessions served as a stimulant to the Ideathon that followed in the afternoon. The goal of these sessions was to understand fundamental conditions that drive the transformation of socioecological systems, and how knowledge plays a key role in the process.
The discussions revolved around three core themes:
Embracing complexity: What tools and approaches adequately capture the complexity of the socio-ecological systems that we seek to transform? How do we achieve a shared vision of sustainability, and how can we best support those implementing it in practice?
Catalyzing co-benefits between nature and human wellbeing: What is the scientific evidence, and how can we amplify positive examples? Can tipping points be observed?
Rewiring the conventional thinking of sustainable development. What needs to change in how we think, plan, and act?
The Ideathon employed various techniques tested by the Wyss Academy for Nature and its advisors to foester creative thinking and enable collaboration across different sectors and disciplines. The outputs were documented and shared as part of a growing knowledge base, with several ideas directly informing the Wyss Academy for Nature's projects.

Building on our Experience
Project Update October 9, 2022
The first Wyss Academy Symposium was an ambitious event that triggered a powerful energy, as it brought together experts from different fields and regions around the world. It was an experiment in which we tried a format that was entirely new. We felt that this proved worthwhile. However, it is also clear that further work will be needed in terms of how we collaborate to produce concrete ideas. We identified several areas in which we might improve future events. In particular:A greater involvement of people that live and work in the local landscapes in which we operate could help create a better understanding of our complex challenges. Many dialogues would benefit by starting in a regional setting, ensuring that participants with the relevant contextual knowledge are involved. This would likely improve understanding and ensure deeper discussions. They can then be moved to a global setting. The Wyss Academy will continue to work on a variety of projects that aim to further break down the silos between disciplines. In 2023, we will integrate the valuable learnings from the first Symposium in conducting the second Wyss Academy Dialogues with Purpose: on the True Value of Forests. It will start with dialogues in the regions in which we currently operate. In 2024, we will bring the dialogue to a global level.
