Northern Kenya’s semiarid landscapes are undergoing rapid change. Once a region where pastoralists, wildlife, and ecosystems coexisted in a delicate balance, the pressures of overgrazing, shifting land use, and prolonged droughts are disrupting this harmony. As rangelands deteriorate and water sources diminish, competition over resources intensifies, straining relationships between communities and increasing conflicts between people and wildlife. At the same time, conservation efforts face challenges in ensuring that protected areas remain connected and ecologically functional.
By fostering collaboration between researchers, communities, and policymakers, this project seeks to create a more resilient landscape. Strengthening governance, improving knowledge-sharing, and leveraging both traditional and modern practices will enable communities to make informed decisions that benefit both people and nature. Through shared responsibility and long-term monitoring, we aim to support a future where Northern Kenya’s landscapes remain productive, biodiverse, and sustainable for generations to come.
