This project focuses on promoting sustainable livelihoods and ecosystem restoration through different conservation initiatives. By 2025, the goal is to consolidate and sustain key restoration efforts, such as establishing a youth-managed tree nursery and implementing self-financed water systems. Notable completing the infrastructure improvements that includes the creation of a water systems including a 108,000-liter tower, kiosks, and watering troughs, providing easy access to clean water for communities, livestock, and wildlife. This also reducing the need for encroachment on the wetland, helping regenerate vegetation, decreasing human-wildlife conflict, and fostering a more balanced coexistence between humans and wildlife.
Additionally, the project will address human-wildlife conflicts by conducting participatory mapping of elephant migration routes and identifying conflict hotspots. To create alternatives for sustainable livelihoods, the project will also support the gums and resins value chain, offering training to collectors on best practices for harvesting and sorting. Cooperative governance structures will also be reinforced to improve market access and financial inclusion, ensuring long-term success in the region. This comprehensive approach will restore the Gambella Wetland, benefiting both local communities and wildlife.
