Annual Report 2024

Building momentum & striving for impact

Letter to our stakeholders

Committed to continuous improvement

In 2024, an independent evaluation commissioned by the funders of the Wyss Academy for Nature confirmed its successful progress. The evaluation highlighted the Foundation’s effective establishment, well-implemented project structures across four continents, 91 active projects, and emerging field results. While the Wyss Academy worked to integrate the evaluation’s recommendations and identified opportunities for improvement throughout the year, it also continued its core work of bridging science and practice across its Hubs—including a special focus on the true value of forests.

A quick overview

Achieving results and cruising speed

The metaphor of building an airplane while it takes off is often used to describe the rapid creation and development of the Wyss Academy. In 2024, the Foundation reached cruising speed, achieving tangible results that bring real benefits to both people and nature.

Topic of the year

  • A call to preserve the value of forests

Home to 80% of terrestrial species, forests are being lost at an alarming rate. Every minute, the equivalent of 30 soccer fields of green forest are cleared worldwide. In response, the Wyss Academy launched the Wyss Academy Dialogues in 2024—a global series of events highlighting the true value of forests. The initiative brought together diverse stakeholders from South America, Europe, East Africa, and Southeast Asia to share their perspectives and spark new solutions. The dialogues resulted in concrete actions, fostered a growing and engaged community, and brought the conversation to a global stage at COP16 in Colombia.

Solutionscapes

The Solutionscape approach

The Wyss Academy’s unique approach—known as the Solutionscape approach—is designed to tackle complex challenges that affect both people and nature, such as environmental degradation and competition for resources between wildlife and local communities. By focusing on local priorities and maintaining a global perspective, the approach brings together Indigenous Peoples, local communities, governments, scientists, and businesses to co-create and test real-world solutions. Discover the five key elements that make this approach effective.

Who we are

  • About us

The Wyss Academy for Nature is a foundation that offers a new approach to pressing issues at the intersection of climate change, biodiversity loss, and land use change, including their implications for human well-being and inequality. Operating across four different Hubs around the world, it aims to bridge the gap between understanding these problems and implementing concrete action in response.
